At present Siófok has got 8 sister-cities and the town has international contacts all over the world.
The international relationships are excellent mainly in the fields of culture, sports and tourism. At the same time it is essential to mention the students' and experts' exchange programmes and the regular meetings of choirs and dance ensembles.
The first town Siófok has ever concluded a sister town agreement with was Oulu from Finland. Oulu, the biggest town in the north of Finland, is settled in the issue of river Oulu. Around 104.500 inhabitants live in this town. The official agreement on sister town relationship between the two towns was signed September 9, 1978.The main goal of entering into partnership was to mutually get acquainted with the two peoples having the ties of kindred and to exchange knowledge and experiences in the fields of culture, health care and management. Personal friendships have been established between the inhabitants of the two towns and the friends still keep in touch.
The next agreement on sister town relationship was signed with the town of Netanya in the spring of 1990. Netanya has a splendid location in Israel, it is a town of tourism, sports and diamonds. The access to town is excellent both by air and by road: it takes one hour to get there by car. Besides friendly and family visits, in the past seven years the towns regularly receive student groups and dance ensembles. As a matter of fact, it was the town of Netanya that gave the idea of the International Folklore Festival, named "Golden Shell". Golden Shell Festival has been taking place every year in Siófok since 1991.
The year of 1990 was rich in entering into sister town relationships as the agreement with Gyergyószentmiklós was also signed in that year. At the beginning the two counties, County Hargita and County Somogy got into contact with one-another then the towns of these two counties started enquiring about prospective relationships, too. The population of Gyergyószentmiklós is the same as the population of Siófok, 23.000 people. The location and the surroundings of Gyergyószentmiklós is picturesque, it is close to Gyilkos-lake and Békás-pass. The contacts work very well between our schools, choirs and dance ensembles.
Our fourth sister town is Walnut Creek in California. The official agreement was signed in Feburary of 1993. Unfortunately it is difficult to keep in touch because of the big distance between our two countries but in spite of the big distance a school group from Siófok visited Walnut Creek in 1997 and the Child Choir of Siófok performed in Walnut Creek in April 1999 and they spent unforgettable days there.
The official sister-city agreement between Waldheim (former German Democrat Republic) in Soxony and Siófok was signed in Siófok on 16 /May / 1997 in Siófok during the Season Opening Ceremony and then on 3 October in Waldheim ont he Day of the German Unity.
These were the Estonian tourists who came to Siófok at the beginning of the 90s and proposed to enter into relationship with Pärnu . Later the economic contacts were promoted to town rank and in July of 1993 a co-operation agreement was signed by the leaders of the two towns. This co-operation has been prosperating ever since. There are many similarities between the two towns. Pärnu, situated on the shore of Baltic-sea, joined Hanza-Federation in the 14th century and this alliance greatly determined its further development. In the past years its status was renewed. In the course of time we have learnt of Pärnu, it is the town of summer, sun, sea, health and beautiful parks and the ambiance of peace and quietness. The sister city agreement was signed in 2001, after 10 years of cooperation.
Our latest relationship is established with the well-known holiday resort, Porec in Croatia. Porec has 10.500 inhabitants and a long history of many aspects. Established by the Romans, it was under the supervision of Venice, then it became one of the resorts on the sea of the former Austrian Monarchy. Porec has strong links with Italy even today. It takes one hour by sea to get to Venice. We signed the agreement in 1998.
Our town and Saint Laurent-du-Var has a great touristic, cultural and sport relationship since 1994. The agreement was signed by the leaders of the 2 towns on 19. Aug. 2002. in Siófok at the Kodolányi János College.
In brief, we can say that the international relationships of Siófok work very well. It is important to remember the allied relationships or co-operations are based on the notion the inhabitants of our towns should get acquainted with one-another and should benefit from these relationships in a way or another. As a matter of fact, we owe a lot to the friendly circles and other civilian associations working in our towns.
We have a good contact also with Puerto Vallarta (Mexico), Landsberg (Germany) and Daruvár (Croatia).
