Cultural Centre of the South Region of Lake Balaton


 At Siófok, the Cultural Centre of the South Region of Lake Balaton is the biggest cultural institute of town. It is in the centre of Siófok, close to Water Tower on the main square. On the sqare, in front of the building, one can see the group of statues named "Venus' birth", made by the world-famous Hungarian sculptor, Imre Varga.
The Cultural Centre including an air-conditioned auditorium with 480 seats, is excellent for theatre performances, conferences and other cultural events. Due to the technical facilities, like equipment for simultaneous interpretation, it is well suited for international conferences, too. From autumn till spring it invites the local inhabitants for various cultural events while in the summer, as well as in the early- and late-season it offers attractive cultural programmes of high niveau for tourists coming from all over the Continent.
The best performances for theatre subscription-holders are invited from all over the country, providing regular theatre experiences for adults and children alike. Wide-ranging cultural events are offered for the lovers of operettas, plays an concerts, for folklore and ballet dance fans.
At the same time, the Cultural Centre is the centre of communal life giving home to a number of clubs and civilian associations. In summer, during the season of tourism, it firstly meets the demands of tourists from abroad, mainly in the fields of operettas, folk dance and folk arts.
Mr. Imre Kálmán, the world-famous operetta composer was born at Siófok, and his home-town, also in capacity of being the cultural centre of the South Region of Lake Balaton, pays tribute to his memory and handles his music estate with hommage by regularly setting his wonderful operettas on scene. Mr. Kálmán's two best-known operettas, the "Tsardas Queen" and "Countess Marica" are regularly performed in German language in the Centre of Culture.

Every Tuesday and Friday in the summer a Kálmán-operetta is on and in the early- and late season operetta galas are performed, selected from Kálmán's compositions.
An outstanding cultural event of the estival season is the Golden Shell Folklore Festival to be held in the first week of July each year with the assistance of the Cultural Centre. In the first week of July spectacular, colorful folklore programmes dazzle the audience year by year. Besides, on each Wednesday a folklore evening is given when the masterpieces of the Hungarian folk dance are performed.
On the first floor portico of the Cultural Centre temporary exhibitions are made. Visitors can get acquainted with outstanding artists from among the best ones of the profession. The best artists of the Hungarian folk- and fine arts are presented to the audience here.
In the gala hall on the ground floor of the Cultural Centre one can find the evocative café "Teatrum" where even theatre performances are given. Café Teatrum, with its programmes of literature and music, plays an important part of public life. Its catering hamoniously supplements the peculiarities of these cultural programmes in the evenings.
